Rachel Scott, Custom Paint Job (Chilli + Red Lantern + Moulin Rouge) 2009
Canvas. Paint. Colour. Gesture. Person. People.

The work considers the sofa as a ‘readymade’, loaded with meaning and association: a socially and historically inscribed object with a myriad of referents. By leaving the front empty and signing the back in a single painterly gesture, it acknowledges the tensions and hierarchies involved in the definition of, and relationship between, artwork, viewer and artist.

Working across the disciplines of painting, performance, video and photography, Rachel makes observations and critiques of contemporary existence and art practice. She pulls apart the process of art making and the role of the artist. Rachel graduated with a Master of Visual Arts from the Sydney College of the Arts in 2004 and has since participated in solo and group exhibitions in Australia and internationally.
