Del Kathryn Barton & Romance Was Born
The work of Del Kathryn Barton has served as a direct source of inspiration for the distinctive fabric designs of Romance Was Born. The designers and the artist have collaborated over the past three years to create original, vibrant pieces that combine the sensual with the surreal. Del - best known for her intricate portraits of wide-eyed figures against frenzied, pointillist backgrounds - has created a strong, evocative line drawing with watercolour detail which Romance Was Born have translated into an embroidered lounge. The result is an exuberant, luxurious object.
Born in Sydney in 1972, Del Kathryn Barton is one of Australia’s most high profile contemporary artists. Most recently she has exhibited as part of Neo Goth at the University of Queensland Art Museum and Optimism at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. In 2008 Del Kathryn Barton was awarded the Archibald Prize for her painting You are what is most beautiful about me, a self portrait with Kell and Arella. Her practice employs a wide variety of media including painting, works on paper and sculpture. Del is represented by Kaliman Gallery, Sydney and Karen Woodbury Gallery, Melbourne.
Debuting at the Melbourne Fashion Week 2006, Romance Was Born designers Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett create ‘clothing experiences’ with their original and quirky designs - featuring unexpected combinations of prints and contrasting colours. They recently won the Woolmark Designer Award at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
