Pete Volich, Casting Couch 2009

This couch is a response to the meaning of the Swedish word ‘KLIPPAN’, which translates in English to ‘cliff face’. Pete was thinking of a widely used and recognised symbol and the Paramount Studio logo of the ‘mountain’ seemed fitting. He wanted the couch to act as a memorial that existed within the home and was interested in the idea that the function of the couch is to immerse and comfort you within a constructed and idyllic surrounding.

Pete graduated with BA Honours in Visual Arts in 2000 from Australian National University and has gone on to exhibit extensively both nationally and internationally across a broad range of media. In 2000 he was awarded the Queens Trust Award for emerging artists for Hotel California 2000 at Canberra Contemporary Art Space. Since then he has been selected for numerous awards including Citibank Photographic Portraiture Prize at the Art Gallery New South Wales, shortlisted for the RIPE ANZ Art & Australia award, selected as a finalist for the Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Prize, and most recently included as a finalist for the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship 2008. He has received numerous grants from Australia Council for the Arts and most recently received a Skills and Arts Development grant to undertake a mentorship with internationally acclaimed film and video artist Isaac Julien in 2007/08 in London.
