Will French, Give Us A Wave 2009

Will French’s multidisciplinary practice examines a broad range of issues and ideas, from the popular to the political. In this work, nautical signal flags - used to communicate the distress call associated with fire - are reorganised to form an abstract, indecipherable pattern. In his practice Will uses flags and their symbolic, coded meaning to create strong statements relating to events that affect us all.

Born in Melbourne in 1981, Will French spent much of his youth as an expatriate growing up in Seoul and Jakarta. Now based in Sydney, Will constantly seeks to challenge himself to gain new skills and technical knowledge in creating his works. Examples include the creation of a motorcycle-powered sewing machine titled, Check out my stitches (for which he won the prestigious Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Artist Travel Scholarship in 2008) and a mechanical replica of the Tour de France titled, Franc-o-phile / Velo-style exhibited in 2009 at GRANTPIRRIE gallery, Sydney.
